BIRTHSTONES: Recently I have been asked to make two bracelets using birthstones with earrings and pendants to match. The ladies were born in January and February which meant working with garnets (Jan) and amethyst (Feb) gemstones. Cost of the gemstones can vary greatly with 5mm faceted amethysts costing almost £5.00 each and with 7 of them in a bracelet, the basic costs of a silver bracelet can be expensive.
GEMSTONES: I almost always buy my gemstones from Kernowcraft.com in Cornwall as they are high grade stones with excellent quality control. They also have a matching service so I can be sure of buying seven matching 5mm stones or 5 x 10 x 8mm oval stones for a bracelet or 2 matching stones for earrings, etc. This is useful for me to ensure a high quality result. However, as with everything that is worth having, the cost of a high grade AAA gemstones can be costly. Therefore, if you are thinking of having a bracelet made, check the cost of your preferred gemstones first. I usually ask people to buy their own gemstones with my help and bring them to me for the design to be made. Sometimes people ask me to use a gemstone they already have in their possession or one that is already in a piece of jewellery they don't like. Either way, a superb piece of jewellery can be made.
FINDINGS: I like to experiment with various kinds of silver connections to join the bezels to one another. I am able to make the simple round circles to join to one another or connections in a figure of eight shape with or without a cross on the top for decoration. I make various connections so that customers have something to look at to help them with their decision making.

MY NEXT COMMISSION IS UNDER WAY: a bracelet using blue lace agate stones
My dentist noticed the amber bracelet I was wearing and asked me if I was able to match a stone with a stone in a pendant that she had had years and which she liked and would like to have a bracelet made to match the pendant. When I looked at the pendant stone, I recognised it as blue lace agate. We researched the stone on the internet and found the best value ones at Kernowcraft.com. She has just ordered the gemstones and I am presently awaiting her next visit to choose her preferred design for the connections and the magnetic catch.
